About Tan A. Ince, MD, Ph.D.
Dr. Tan A. Ince is a physician-scientist who is board certified in anatomic pathology, with subspecialty training in breast pathology with Dr. Lester and gynecologic pathology with Dr. Crum at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Having trained with Robert Weinberg at MIT, Dr. Ince gained expertise in the role of normal cell-of-origin of human cancers, as well as epigenomics, cancer stem cells, and endocrine receptors in the development of tumorigenesis. Dr. Ince developed a breast cancer classification system based on normal cellular lineages, characterized by combinatorial expression of various hormone receptors. His laboratory was among the first to identify Histone Deacetylase 7 (HDAC7) and Heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) as a key components of Cancer Stem Cell (CSC) epigenomic regulation. Dr. Ince has been involved in the development of micro-devices for medical applications, and invented various nutrient media for patient derived breast, ovary, fallopian tube and leukemia cell cultures. Dr. Ince has been awarded several nutrient media patents and the cell lines established by his laboratory have been used by other investigators around the world.
Dr. Ince received his MD at Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey in 1988 and his Ph.D. in 1996 at Cornell University in New York, NY. He completed his post-doctoral training at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. In 2001, he became a Visiting Clinical Scholar at the Whitehead Institute/Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Instructor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ince was promoted to Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School (2008) and Professor at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine (2018). Since 2020, Dr. Ince has been the Pathologist-in-Chief at New York Presbyterian, Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and a Vice-chair at Weill Cornell Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
